Author Visit - Local Historian David DeKok on the Centralia, PA Mine Fire

Join author and historian David DeKok for a discussion of Centralia, PA and the coal mine fire that has been burning beneath the town for over 50 years. Mr. DeKok will discuss why the fire is still burning, what Centralia looks like today, and how the town has influenced popular culture, particularly the horror movie Silent Hill (2006).

Originally from Michigan, DeKok first became interested in Centralia while working as a reporter at The News-Item in Shamokin, Pennsylvania in the 1970s. He went on to write more than 500 articles about the fire, the mishandling of the disaster by local authorities and the devastating effects on the town and its residents. His research culminated in two books: Unseen Danger: A Tragedy of People, Government, and the Centralia Mine Fire (2000) and Fire Underground: The Ongoing Tragedy of the Centralia Mine Fire (2009). Mr. DeKok was also consulted for the Centralia documentary The Town That Was (2009). His next book, The Girl Who Was Killed in the Library: Betsy Aardsma, Penn State University, and the Murderer Who Got Away (Globe Pequot Press), will be released in the fall of 2014. Mr. DeKok currently resides in Harrisburg, PA. For more information, visit http://daviddekok.com/.
