      Dickens in Philadelphia Tour

      Led by our Dickens Literary Ambassador Edward Pettit, we retrace Dickenss 1842 visit to the City of Brotherly Love and learn about Charles Dickenss many stateside adventures, including a visit with Phillys own Edgar Allan Poe.

      A minibus will take us along a route past many of the places the celebrated author visited when he was in town including the Pennsylvania Hospital, the United States Hotel (now the Omni), and the Merchants Exchange. Well even take a ride by the Poe House on Spring Garden Street where well hear about the historic meeting of the two great writers.

      Stops will include the Philadelphia Waterworks and a guided tour of Eastern State Penitentiary, where Dickens spent many hours.

      Meet at the Free Library Rare Book Department. Arrive a bit early, and youll have a chance to view our current exhibition: "At Home on the Stage: Charles Dickens and the Theatre."

      Registration and advance payment are required.
