      Debt, Violence, and Sovereignty

Rituals of sacrifice arguably define both religion and politics. But under capitalism, sacrifice escapes ritual containment and connection to the sacred and goes underground, where as always it operates as a secret machine for the construction of racial, gender and class identities — but here largely by denegation or in purely secular terms. Most of our willingness to sacrifice takes the form of the secular rites of being willing to pay and being willing to remain in debt. As the crisis of accumulation continues through ecological endgame, and under fascism proper, sacrifice re-emerges in the form of parody in the service of the nation-state, and in fundamentalist regimes it takes the form of martyrdom, genocide and holocaust. As a result, its crucial role in economics, in psychological and erotic maturation, and in cultural transmission is distorted or foreclosed. But the discourse of sacrifice has a long history, deep roots and profound power. What is to be done? Even to approach an answer involves questions of the nature of ritual, of secularization and the return of the sacred, of the symbolic and the material, of animal and human interaction, of patriarchy and egalitarianism, of cosmology, teleology and more. This seminar can’t resolve these questions but it will, we hope, open them up for debate and discussion.
