      Women in STEM Wiki-a-Thon

In 2014 only 15% of English-language Wikipedia biographies were about women. Today, through the work of Women in Red, AfroCrowd, and countless other volunteers and organizations, that number has risen to almost 18%. Still, the scientific contributions of women, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals remain underrepresented on Wikipedia. We’re working with 500 Women Scientists Philly Pod to do our part! Join us for an edit-a-thon where we will focus on articles about women in the fields of ecology and environmental science. The event will kick off with a lively talk about women in ecology by entomologist Tanya Dapkey. The talk will be followed by a light lunch and an editing session with Wikipedian-in-residence Mary Mark Ockerbloom and volunteers from the Philly Pod. Our Goals: Improve the representation of women in STEM on Wikipedia Learn how to keep the world’s largest online encyclopedia vibrant and growing Things You Can Do to Prepare: Create a user name and password for yourself on Wikipedia (and write it down). Pick a Wikipedia article on a topic you know about. Print the page, read it, and make notes on errors, concerns, and possible sources. Bring it to the edit-a-thon. Think of someone or something important in the field of women in ecology.  Is there an existing Wikipedia article? If so, read it and make notes on possible changes. Mark errors. Is any information missing that could be added? What sources could you cite? Bring it to the WikiSalon. If there isn’t a Wikipedia article, write down the name of the person or topic, with a couple of sentences about what the person does and why it matters. Note good sources about the person or topic and the research involved. Bring it along.   Have you taken any photographs of people or things that might be of interest on Wikipedia, such as women at work or the equipment they use? Bring those too. About 500 Women Scientists Philly Pod The Philly Pod of 500 Women Scientists began in March 2017 with the goal of bringing science to the people of Philadelphia and ensuring equity, diversity, and inclusion are at the forefront of our scientific practices and institutions. We stand together to promote STEM education, to support each other in all aspects of our careers, and to advocate for a fact-based public dialogue.
